Book Review: “Threshing Day” by Rebecca Yarros

From the moment “Untitled Empyrean” first hit bookstore websites, Fourth Wing fans have been chomping at the bit to get their hands on the latest Rebecca Yarros book. While there was a wave of disappointment when we learned that it wasn’t book four, but rather a collection of short stories.

Threshing Day [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is thirteen short stories about a key day in the Fourth Wing world. It’s the day cadets and dragons choose each other, or for some, die trying. In this collection, we get to see what led up to some of our favorite riders finding their dragon, and getting some clues about their signets.

Before I picked this up, I saw a clip from Rebecca’s launch event where she said that this book is the only perspective we can trust, since it’s not ‘transcribed’ by a scribe. I kept that in mind when I read Threshing Day, which I think impacted my experience. Knowing that things we have read in other books might not be accurate helped smooth out some of the inconsistencies.

Overall, without spoilers, I enjoyed these little looks into some of our favorite characters’ perspectives at such a major moment in their lives. There are plenty of clues to keep all the investigators busy while we wait for the fourth book, but if you’re just here for the vibes, you’ll enjoy it too. Only time will tell which of these little details are actually major pieces of the Empyrean puzzle.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
