Book Review: “(Mostly) Human Resources” by Grace Viall

It’s been a few years since one of my friends dragged her friend over to the line I was in at YALLFest and said, “Tell her!” That’s when my new friend Grace told me that she sold her book and we joked that she should be on my podcast to talk about it when it released. Now, a couple years later, that book is in my hands and that podcast is out in the ether.

Grace initially told me (Mostly) Human Resources [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] was if Supernatural or X-Files had HR and were bad at their jobs. That’s exactly the vibe you’re going to get from this book, so if you love monster of the week shows, buckle up.

Alexys is in HR at a monster hunting organization called Entity when one of her Wardens disappears in the dense woods of the Appalachian Mountains. She decides she’s going to go find him in order to save both him and her chances at a promotion. The one snag in her plan is that Nic, her nemesis from the research department, decides he’s going to go too. The missing Warden may or may not have been gathering intel on a cryptid that hadn’t been seen in a while. So the two of them head off to West Virginia in search of a missing man and a crytid that might be extinct.

This was a fun read which features some fun monsters, including one Grace created for this story. The atmosphere and vibes make it a perfect read for spooky season. There is a dash of romance as these two workplace enemies shift into slow burn territory. It sets things up for a very fun book two as they will have to figure out the HR side of their budding feelings.

Bonus: If you love Supernatural and X-Files, keep an eye out for Easter eggs.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
