If you’ve been around the LiteraryHype world for a minute, you’ve probably seen me end up in a situation because I dove into a book without researching it at all. I avoid reading blurbs because I’m really good at picking out details that lead to figuring the whole book out early. This time, I thought the title of Warrior Princess Assassin was all referring to one person. That was not the case in Brigid Kemmerer’s book.
Warrior Princess Assassin [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is a three-POV story following Jory, a princess who is being married off to another king in a political marriage, Ky, the warrior king who has magic everyone fears, and the princess’ childhood best friend/crush, Asher, who was exiled from the castle as a traitor and grew up to be an assassin. Asher is assigned to kill Jory and Ky as they are about to marry, and he’s got very little time to do it. Instead, he decides he’s going to run away with her. However, Jory, having now met her betrothed and believing he wants good for both of their countries, insists they kidnap Ky too.
Easy peasy.
Their escape sets them off on a wild journey of survival and attempting to figure out who wants them dead. But time is running out for them to solve the case and save their people.
I knew this was Brigid’s adult debut when I picked it up, but I was not anticipating it being a why choose story. There are some hints early on, so I figured that out quick, but assumed I was reading too much into it initially. It’s a slow burn, so don’t expect them to figure out their feelings quickly.
Warrior Princess Assassin is a fun story with action, intrigue, magic, and romance all woven together. I was reading a couple books at the time I picked this up, as is my usual, but this was the one that pulled my interest hardest. It was just so fun! Plus, I was listening to the audiobook, so having Teddy Hamilton’s voice in my ear as Asher was a treat.
I semi-jokingly referred to this book as the dead mom club, so if loss of a parent is a trigger for you, this is not the book. All three of our main characters are grappling with young deaths of their mothers, which is an odd way to bond as a throuple, but it works.
I am so antsy to get my hands on book two! I cannot wait to see how they make their relationship work and save their two kingdoms.
