I’ve been a fan of Holly James since her first published book, so seeing her spread her wings under a different name and subgenre is exciting. Holly Michelle made her debut with a sports-adjacent romance. I love sports romance, so I was eager to see Holly’s take on baseball.
Last Night Was Fun [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] follows two employees of San Diego’s professional baseball team. They work in analytics and are up for the same promotion… and they are kinda enemies even without that issue dangling over their heads. Emmy is the only woman in the department and Gabe seems to always have one up on her.
Emmy gets a text from an unknown number that simply says, “Last night was fun”, which leads to a blossoming friendship via SMS. They just don’t realize the person they are chatting with is their rival until after Gabe agrees to be Emmy’s plus one for a wedding in Mexico.
Last Night Was Fun is a delightful little romp. It’s chocked full of beloved tropes, and probably more baseball than most actual sports romances. Holly doesn’t really call it a sports romance, but I think this counts, even if no one is actively playing. It’s just a nerdier take on the genre, and honestly, I’m here for it.
I started several books at the same time, but this is the one I found myself wanting to pick up over the others. I think it was even more fun for me since I visit San Diego every year, so I’ve seen many of the locations first hand. That really brought the story to life for me and made it feel less fictional in a way, even though names of teams and locations were changed.
