My girl Holly Michelle (aka Holly James) is back to her roots of romance with a magical twist! If you’re looking for a light and fun read, this might be one to add to your TBR.
You’ll Be The Death of Me [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is perfect for fans of The Good Place TV show and the movie Eternity. It’s set in the afterlife, where a corporation helps people transition from death to life. The problem is, Dell has an old lady name, and someone from The Afterlife Administration accidentally snuffs out her time on early instead of the correct (and older) Verdella.
Dell was at the top of her game as a chef from a rich family and was about to marry the mayors son. So, she’s a little mad when Cole tells her that’s all over due to a clerical error, even though he got special permission to help her fix where she went wrong in life so she can live again. They just need to avoid catching feelings along the way.
Suuuuuuuure. That’s gonna work reeeeeeeal well…..
Another story you can compare this to is A Christmas Carol just without the holiday vibes and more mystery. You’ll Be The Death Of Me leans more into goofy and humorous vibes than you’d get from the classis story, which I enjoyed. I especially enjoyed that Dell couldn’t tell the difference between her twin brothers’ voices, which I found to be rather entertaining as someone who was frequently mixed up for various family members by voice.
It’s not all shenanigans and comedy, since this story does deal with death. There are plenty of emotional scenes as Dell watches her family deal with her death, and, without spoilers, learns what was actually happening in her life. There are some other characters that come into the story in unique ways, and deliver some added layers of emotion, despire some ridiculousness to their situations.
I wanted a little more chemistry between Dell and Cole, which is tricky when you’re dealing with ghosts as is. It’s still a solid read if you’re in the mood to explore the afterlife if it was run by a corporation.
