“Daisy Jones & The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I can’t decide if this is a ‘Bookstagram made me do it’ read or not.

I picked up the book because I had the opportunity to watch the Daisy Jones and The Six TV adaptation before its release, and I felt like I should probably read the book first. So I did. (Check out my show comparison review here.) I wasn’t expecting to like it since I’m not a big 70’s fan, but this book pleasantly surprised me.

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid [Buy Bookshop Amazon] tells the story of a band’s rise and fall throughout the 1970’s. It’s written in an unusual style, as though interviews from members of the band, their team, and other voices who would know something about the topic are all spliced together to tell the story. That was annoying at first, but I got used to it and got over it.

The story itself is pretty wild. It is loosely based on Fleetwood Mac and is full of all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll you’d imagine it to be. There’s a lot of tension between Billy and… everyone. Daisy isn’t his only problem. And I must say, I really liked the girls of this story. Daisy, Camilla, and Karen were all pretty fierce in taking control of their lives, so I’m here for it. I’m not sure I’d call it a twist, but the reveal toward the end was quite nice and made the story even better.

Overall, the writing is pretty solid. I just had to get over the style choice first. The repeated use of “mike” instead of “mic” when referencing the microphone drove me bat crap crazy, but that’s probably just a me problem.

Now that I’ve read it, I can definitely see where the hype comes from. It’s a pretty solid novel.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
