“When Sparks Fly” From Helena Hunting

I’m still trying to wrap my brain around some parts of Helena Hunting’s newest romance novel, When Sparks Fly. It’s a wild one, y’all.

This novel gives us perspective from both main characters, Avery and Declan. They have been best friends since college and now live together. Yes, there are as many buried feelings as you’d expect there to be.

This starts coming out when Avery leaves for a blind date and Declan gets a little jealous of how hot she looks for someone else. While that guy is awful, upset Declan goes out and picks up a random chick. Avery finds him still drunk in bed with the stranger in the morning when he’s supposed to drive her to an important meeting. She’s afraid of driving in the rain after losing both parents to a crash and her tires are too bald to be safe. Avery ends up in a serious crash, and a guilt-stricken Declan insists on caring for her.

That’s where things get a little weird. I won’t give it away, but the way they start exploring the chemistry between them does not compute to me, but maybe I’m just a boring weirdo. You be the judge.

I enjoyed When Sparks Fly despite some of it being a little too outlandish for my tastes. It’s still a fun, spicy story, and as someone traumatized by a crash, it’s relatable.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
