Mandy Hale Says Don’t Believe The Swipe When Dating Online

As promised to those of you following @literaryhypewoman on Instagram (as you should!), this week I’m taking a look at Mandy Hale’s fifth release, Don’t Believe The Swipe. You might know her better as “The Single Woman” who has appeared on national news outlets, including Good Morning America as one of its most inspirational Instagrammers.

After exchanging tweets about her previous reads, Beautiful Uncertainty, The Single Woman, I’ve Never Been To Vegas, But My Luggage Has, I met her at a book release for You Are Enough and she said we should get coffee. I didn’t think it was real, until we started hanging out a couple months later. So, full disclosure, Mandy is my real life friend.

This book was special for me as a fan of hers since I got a front row seat to the process. While driving to hike around a waterfall, she shared her idea for Don’t Believe The Swipe and how much she believed in it. She won me over with the glimmer of excitement and hope in her eyes as she talked about it, and I’ve been eager to read it ever since.

Simply put, Don’t Believe The Swipe is a guide to online dating without losing yourself in the process. Mandy starts out with a dictionary of modern dating terms, because things have become far more ridiculous than catfishing and ghosting. Now there are things like zombie-ing, glamboozling, love bombing, and textationships to contend with while looking for a partner. If you don’t know what those words mean, grab yourself a copy and get to learning.

Mandy shares how these terms come into play through her personal history with dating. This goes beyond the infamous Mr. E, although he does make yet another brief appearance on the pages. Mandy is a storyteller with a unique voice, sharing her wild tales of horrible first dates, relationships that fell apart, and how she persevered through it with her confidence and self-esteem in tact. A testament to that fact is how kind she is to some of these jokers on the page, but you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

She shares advice on how you can avoid losing yourself while chasing the swipe, but I’m still partial to the stories. That’s probably because I’m not out there looking for a fish in a sea full of trash, but for those who are trying the dating app game, this could be a highly encouraging read.
