Matt Dinniman is riding a popularity wave right now for his LitRPG series, Dungeon Crawler Carl, but he’s also feeding fans with a standalone novel to hold everyone over until book 8 of DCC and the graphic novel.
Operation Bounce House [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is about a guy named Oliver who runs a ranch with his sister and their fleet of droids, called honeybees. Oliver and his sister are decendants of settlers on another planet, where they were promised to live in peace. But, a government on earth has other plans and is now deploying robotic war machines on New Sonora that people are remotely piloting as part of a video game called Operation Bounce House.
I did the audiobook version of Operation Bounce House because Matt gets the best narrators. Yes, Berkley sent me an early copy and I held out for audio just to hear Travis Baldree and Jeff Hayes. Normally, I listen to audiobooks at 2x speed, but I couldn’t do it on this one. The vocal tone for some of the characters was really hard for me to discern at that speed, so I had to slow it down to 1.3x speed. It’s not a bad thing, just something to be aware of if you have some hearing issues like I do. The audiobook is so well done with all of the voices, that if you’ve listened to DCC, then you’ll experience a similar vibe in the vocal presentation.
I had a hard time getting into the story, which might be due to trying to find the right speed at the beginning. Eventually, I got my brain wrapped around what was happening and ended up enjoying it. Matt’s writing includes some quirky, bizarre situations, comical twists, and some semi-subtle commentary on major issues. This book touches on immigration, weapons of war, sex work, AI, and more. Matt’s writing doesn’t come across as preachy, but rather provides situations that make you think about the issues involved.
Bonus, there’s a subtle nod to some beloved DCC characters.
If you like Dungeon Crawler Carl [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM], this is worth checking out, but keep in mind, it’s a totally different story.
