Book Review: “Blood Moon” by Britney S. Lewis

When I got the email that Toppling Stacks Book Tours was running a tour for Britney S. Lewis’ book, I got very excited. I’ve casually known Britney for a while and heard her talking about her book, Blood Moon, so an opportunity to both read this book early and turn it into a podcast was the perfect combination.

Blood Moon [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is definitely for the Twilight [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] and The Vampire Diaries [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] girlies, especially those who thought the show did Bonnie Bennett wrong. Britney is giving us the black girl main character that

This story follows Mirabella as she’s preparing to leave home for college. She gets accepted to a Kansas college she never applied to, but the financial package is just too good to turn down, so she goes. There, she runs into an old family friend, Seven, who is also a student there and member of the football team. Mira also meets a guy named Julian who seems to have an issue with her for no real reason… but he’s hot… so…. ope.

Mira gets a letter from her mother, who she hasn’t seen or heard from in years, telling her that things aren’t what they seem. It reminds Mira of the stories her mom used to tell her about vampires and werewolves. They couldn’t have anything to do with a series of animal attacks in the area, could they?

Overall, this is a pretty fun story. The Twilight vibes are super strong, so if you go into Blood Moon expecting something similar, you’ll enjoy it. Britney does take some fun twists through the vampire and werewolf lore, which keeps it feeling fresh and intriguing. There are some mild spicy scenes, but this is classified as YA, so they don’t get very graphic.

I did zone out occasionally while listening to the audiobook and get a little lost from time to time, but that’s probably more ADHD than anything. The narrator wasn’t my favorite. She felt way too vocally mature for an 18-year-old and said woof instead of wolf, which annoyed me. My only real change to the book would’ve been a greater differentiation from the Twilight and Vampire Diaries tropes. This is first in a series, so I’m hopeful we’ll see more deviation as things move forward.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
