Mazey Edding’s “A Brush With Love”

Full disclosure: when I first saw the cover of A Brush With Love on Edelweiss, I thought it was about painting. (Don’t judge me. It was a tiny picture that looked like paint and paintbrushes are a thing. It works, okayyy.) So, when my bookstagram buddy read group mentioned “Dental Dan”, I was very confused for a minute. Then I actually looked at the description and wasn’t sure I’d enjoy a dental school romance.

Annnnnd here I am, eating my words.

A Brush With Love follows Harper as she’s finishing up her final year of dental school and stressing about where she’s going to end up in residency for oral surgery. She’s known around campus for being hyper-focused on studying, so when she bumps into a first year student and wrecks his mold, he’s pretty excited that she volunteers to help him fix it. Sparks fly, because obviously.

As hot and nice as Dan might be, Harper isn’t sure about a relationship. She hasn’t really dated at all because the only love in her life is dental school, so she attempts to keep things strictly friendly.

Meanwhile, Dan has his own set of issues. He doesn’t actually want to be at dental school and is struggling to keep up. He’s only there because his dad died and his mom demanded Dan help run his father’s dental practice. He’d rather be in his old life in finance, so he’s avoiding talking to his mom at all. The only good thing about dental school in his mind is meeting Harper.

This novel is sweet with a smidge of steamy, but it also has some hefty depth to it. No spoilers, but Harper has to face the reasons behind her work ethic and her views on mental health challenges. Dan has to have hard conversations about how family and career can come into balance.

I enjoyed A Brush With Love a lot more than I thought I would, and even stayed up reading through the night, so that’s always a good sign. I’m looking forward to the second book in this series (and absolutely impressed that Mazey is writing multiple novels while in dental school herself. That’s some dedication!)

Rating: 4 out of 5.
