Bridget Morrisey’s “Love Scenes”

If you’ve been around this site at all, you’ve probably figured out that I dig a good romcom. That also applies to movies. So, when I read the blurb about Bridget Morrisey’s adult debut, Love Scenes, I had high hopes. Thankfully, this rose to the occasion.

Love Scenes follows Sloane Ford shortly after being written off her hit TV show. That forced her to take a made-up job on the set of her family’s movie to save face. She’s a consulting producer, while her stepfather and sister direct, her mom and ex-step mom are supporting actresses (playing a secret couple), and her brother is composing the music. As if that isn’t enough of a cluster, Sloane quickly learns the leading man is the guy she previously worked with who was so awful to her, she almost quit acting entirely. Hot mess express.

The guy is a handsome Irish actor named Joseph Donovan. He swears up and down that he’s changed and he’s not going to ruin Sloane’s family’s movie, but the first couple days prove it to be easier said than done. Her family orders her to run lines with him.

Part of Joseph’s problem is that the actress opposite him is struggling and not performing well herself. When a “contractual issue” causes her to leave the production, Sloane decides to step in as the lead actress despite her complex stance on Joseph… which only gets more complicated with time.

In short, Love Scenes is a fun lovers-to-coworkers-to-enemies story set behind the scenes of Hollywood. It’s got all the drama you’d expect from actors, but there are a lot of beautiful complexities layered into the characters. I am thoroughly here for it and I hope you are too.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
