Kate Bromley Talk(s) Bookish To Me

There are some characters that just hit you differently. Kara Sullivan in Kate Bromley’s Talk Bookish To Me is one of those fictional friends that I think will connect with many readers. While I saw much of myself in her as a writer and bookstagrammer, and I’m sure avid readers will recognize aspects of her personality, I am hopeful most of you don’t have her bad luck of running into your ex at inconvenient times.

For Kara, that poor timing has her coming face to face with her college ex, Ryan, at her best friend’s pre-wedding party. The guy she walked away from ten years prior just so happens to be the childhood friend of her best friend’s groom. Yikes.

After Kara and Ryan are forced into an awkward not-a-double-date-double-date dinner with their friends, they end up grabbing drinks alone. That’s when Kara’s most recent ex-boyfriend walks in and she lies that she’s on a date with Ryan. Another twist of fate lands him in need of a place to stay for the week leading up to the wedding. Not awkward at all.

I loved this rom-com, not just because of the romance, but for the genuine characters. I mean, who hasn’t played a round of whack-a-mole with pesky exes popping up at weird times, struggled with self doubt, and preferred cozy clothes to dressing up? Plus, this one has a few more twists than the standard romance formula.

I give Talk Bookish To Me four stars and I’m eager to see what Bromley churns out next. Grab yourself a copy and snuggle up with a sweet story.
