Kristin Dwyer is one of those authors that you just know will emotionally devastate you before you even start the book. She’s a wonderful person in real life, but she’s going to break your heart as a reader. That’s what I was expecting when I picked up her latest book.
In Time With You [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] starts out in a really rough place. Nieve is struggling with the recent death of her boyfriend, Carter. She blames herself, as does Carter’s best friend who never liked Nieve in the first place. But in a twist of fate and magic, Nieve wakes up the day after the funeral to one year prior, giving her a second chance. However, if she makes changes to her life on the second time around, it causes ripple effects. Like, different versions of her mom and people not remembering what happened the day before, kind of ripples. Nieve becomes focues on trying to figure out which change will save Carter’s life, but time is also pushing Max further into her orbit than previous variations of the timeline.
If you feel a bit confused reading this book, that’s the point. Nieve is lost trying to figure out the magic and keep track of what is real in the current timeline as everything is changing with the ripples. I found it fun to have that same discombobulated feeling as Nieve.
I adore Kristin’s explorations of grief because she does it in such a real, raw way. This book in particular highlights the struggle to figure out how to move on after a loss and return to art and things that bring you joy. In this story, Nieve is an art student with a quirky grandma who raises sheep, and finding her way back to creating is a part of the story in a beautiful way. You can tell Kristin dealt with something similar in a personal way.
