Book Review: “Made You Look” by Tanya Grant

Book mail is forever the best kind of mail, and I’m always grateful when a new book arrives. One that hit my mailbox, courtesy of Berkley, is Made You Look by Tanya Grant. It has snowy trees on the cover, so when the first snow of the year fell, I grabbed it and started reading.

Made You Look [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is about a group of influencers who head off to a remote cabin in the woods to promote a new resort, along with a photographer, stylist, and the influencers’ manager. A party bus drops them off, but things deteriorate quickly, starting with the discovery that they have next to no food, and that one has been working on a secret project. But when one member of their squad dies and the wifi stops working, things go downhill fast.

All of the characters are kinda terrible, which, yes, that’s the point, and they all have secrets of some kind. This story is told from the perspective of our main influencer’s two best friends. Lucy is the photographer and Caitlyn is a fellow influencer living in Sydney’s shadow. My main issue with the book is that their voices are too similar in style. It made it hard to distinguish the two and easy to forget who’s perspective you’re reading. That’s also true of the audiobook version. I nabbed it from the library while on a road trip to continue the story, but the narrators’ voices are also similar.

Plot-wise, this story goes in phases. It starts strong with an interesting concept, even if they are all annoying. The middle is fine, but some of the moments are a bit unbelievable. The end includes some good twists, but the ultimate end fell a little flat for me. Despite this rollercoaster, it was still entertaining enough to keep me awake while I was driving for several hours.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
