Whenever a celebrity reads their own audiobook, I’m going to read it in that form. There’s something so special about hearing them read their words to you. Despite having two physical copies of Soul Boom by Rainn Wilson, I opted to listen to the audiobook and I have no regrets.
Soul Boom [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] might not be the book you’re expecting from Rainn if you only know him from The Office. However, he has been busy with his Soul Boom Podcast and Soul Pancake company, so this fits into those veins. This book is Rainn’s exploration of the various facets of religion, blended with his signature humor.
Religion can be such a controversial topic, but Rainn handles it with respect and humility, which is nice to see. He doesn’t paint himself as an expert. Rainn shares his stories and research across various religions, including his own faith, Ba’hai. He also adds in a healthy dose of nerdiness, with my favorite part being a list where you guess if it’s a Kung Fu quote or religious text. That list is quite surprising.
Overall, I’d recommend this book for anyone looking for a good non-fiction religion read that doesn’t take things too seriously or personally. It’s well-written and generally pretty clear while explaining complex topics. No notes.
