Book Review: “The Buffalo Hunter Hunter” by Stephen Graham Jones

If you’ve been around here for a minute, you can probably tell that horror is not my jam. Horror reviews are few and far between for me, but this one caught my attention. I first noticed the cover at New York Comic Con when it was featured on the Simon & Shuster booth wall (even though it took an embarasssingly long time for me to realize there was a second ‘Hunter’ in the title). The cool cover, the mention of vampires in the description, and the fact that LibroFM sent me an advanced listening copy of the audiobook made me willing to give it a shot.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is told from three perspectives. We are introduced to the story with Etsy’s perspective. She’s in academia and needs a big break with something to publish. The discovery of a journal in a church wall might just be the key, since her several-greats grandfather is the author. He was a Lutheran pastor in 1812 writing down the confession of a Blackfeet visitor who claims to be a vampire. Side note: the way the audio blends Etsy’s narrator into her grandfather’s voice was a delightful production detail.

This novel is a revenge story about a real massacre of Blackfeet people. The way Jones mixes historical details in with the horror elements is excellent. Even though I was a wee bit stressed at the time and not grasping the story in the way I normally would, I could still sense that I was listening to a well-written novel.

The concept for this book is so fascinating and I’m glad I gave it a try. I just wish I had been a little less stressed with life so I could focus better. With it being audio, sometime I wouldn’t catch that the perspectives of Good Stab and Arthur had switched and I’d get a little confused. I was more able to focus in the second half, but that’s when things start getting weird.

Overall, I think this is a solid book. It just wasn’t the right one for me at that time. I do think I’ll check out some of Graham’s other works at another time since I own several of them.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
