Welcome to another edition of ‘Bookstagram made me do it’.
Well, sort of. Icebreaker by Hannah Grace has been all over the bookish socials for a while, so I got a copy. What finally spurred me to read it was participating in a hockey romance BookTube collaboration.
Icebreaker [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] centers on an ice skater named Anastasia and the captain of her college’s hockey team, Nate. When equipment for one of the ice rinks breaks, the ice skaters will have to share with the hockey team. This disrupts Anastasia’s extremely planned life and turns Nate and his team into her enemies. Making things worse, there’s also a mishap with Anastasia’s partner, Aaron, and she must rely on Nate to help her train for her next big competition.
This book does touch on eating disorders and body shaming, so if that’s triggering to you, then maybe skip this one. Anastasia’s partner, Aaron makes frequent comments about her weight and how she’s getting too heavy for him to lift. He even goes so far as to craft a ridiculous diet for her, where she’s not getting enough nutrition to function properly. Nate notices this and tries to step in to help her develop a healthier relationship with food.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read, but far from perfect. If you’re a fan of more spice/less plot, then this is a hockey romance you’d probably enjoy. For me, the spice didn’t always seem necessary. Between the excess spice and some of the plot dragging, I feel like this needed some work. I think that by cutting 50-100 pages, this would’ve been a much stronger novel. That being said, it’s still entertaining.
