Kathleen Glasgow is one of those authors who really saw a big boost from the rise of Booktok and the support of Girl In Pieces [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM]. I still haven’t gotten around to reading it, but when I saw the ARC of her latest book, The Glass Girl, I snatched it with exceptional speed. I also landed an audio ALC through LibroFM, so I had the pleasure of reading it in multiple formats before chatting with Kathleen about it.
The Glass Girl [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is about a 15-year-old girl named Bella as she falls deeper into an alcohol addiction. She got her first drink from her grandmother at 11. Now, her grandmother passed away, her parents are bickering even after getting divorced, and her secret boyfriend dumped her, so she’s turning to the bottle more and more. It comes to a head when she has an exceptionally bad night drinking and gets sent off to a teen rehab facility to learn how to live.
This book is such an intense read, so please take care of yourself while reading if alchoholism is a trigger for you, but it’s such an important story to tell. Learning about halfway through that Kathleen also started drinking young, so she channeled the emotions and thoughts from that time into this story really highlights the depths of darkness that can come from alcoholism. This book is written for teens, so it opens the door for parents to have those tough conversations about addiction and peer pressure.
The audio version of this is exceptionally well done. It can be hard to listen to as Bella is going through the tougher, more intoxicated parts of her story. The narration brings the stress and feelings to life with incredible intensity and emotion. I definitely recommend, but again, take your time and care for yourself as you do.
