Sometimes, I grab ARCs a bit willy nilly at book events, then get home to find some interesting titles in my pile. That’s how I ended up with Blood City Rollers by V.P. Anderson, and I’m not mad about it.
Blood City Rollers [Buy Bookshop Amazon] is about a young ice skater named Mina. She’s on track to be an Olympian, but then she wipes out during a competition. She’s pretty upset about it. However, she’s kidnapped… er… recruited by a vampire roller derby team in need of a new human to play as their jammer.
This is such a cute graphic novel. I love the combination of vampires and roller derby, which leads to some pretty fun rule changes to fit with the superpowered players. The names for some of these players are hilarious, especially the more vampire shows/movies you’ve watched.
This has a lot of great messages for kids, like learning to take up space, navigating sports as a young person deciding how serious they want to be about it, and dealing with stress. However, the plot kinda falls apart toward the end. This is written for kids, so they probably won’t notice too much, but I did. So take that however you’d like. The author is working on books two and three for this series, so hopefully we see some writing improvement as it moves along.
Overall, a cute and fun graphic novel with some good laughs.
