Every once in a while, I sign up for things and immediately forget about it. I’m sure I’m not alone in this because I’ve talked to many others on bookstagram who suffer from this same affliction. Lol. Such is how I ended up reading The Love Interest by Helen Comerford. I can’t tell you what it was in the initial pitch from Colored Pages Book Tours that made me sign up, but I suspect it was superheroes. That’s how I am sometimes, and I’m not mad about it.
The Love Interest [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] gives us a unique twist on the world surrounding superheroes. Jenna is a normal girl living in a town with a bit of a black cloud hanging over it. There was a prophecy that this year, her town would face a crisis and a new superhero would arise to save them. Powered people (and plants and animals) aren’t unusual in this world, so it could be a thing.
While off watching a movie, she gets caught up in a big fire. An attractive guy her age saves her, which turns out to be his first rescue. In this world, the first person the hero saves becomes the hero’s Love Interest, but Jenna isn’t really interested. Her dad and sister aren’t interested in her being the Love Interest either, but despite all their warnings, she keeps ending up around Blaze.
Sounds like a typical YA romance novel, but things definitely get interesting as she gets sucked into spying for the Villains and a whole bunch of other crazy things happen.
Overall, this was a pretty fun ride. I liked the concept of following someone who was forced to be in the hero’s orbit even though they didn’t want to be, and this concept of a fated Love Interest. I don’t want to spoil things, so I’ll just say some of the concepts thrown around make for an interesting world for her to fight through. My nitpicky complaints include a ridiculous amount of “feck” throughout the book and the font formatting got on my nerves. Otherwise, it was a decent read, if predictable.
There is a sequel announced so stay tuned to see if I remember to read book two next year.
