Danielle Paige is best known for giving The Wizard of Oz a fun twist with her Dorothy Must Die series, as well as a few other fairytale remakes. Hearing that she was putting out a fairy godmother origin story definitely piqued my interest. But instead of an old white lady, this time, we get a young black gal in the role.
Wish of the Wicked [Buy Bookshop Amazon] follows Farrow through some crazy times. Her family of witches, the Entente, worked with the three fates to control destinies across the queendoms, but one queen went on a rampage killing them. Farrow survived and hatched a plan to kill the queen herself, but it involves some dramatic surgeries and pretending to be someone else.
There’s so much that happens in this book, I don’t have the space to get into all of it.
I will say, when I heard origin story, I didn’t think we’d get to see Cinderlla. However, we do, and it’s in a really fun way. I rather enjoyed that chunk of the story.
Overall, this was a decent start to a series. It was a fun re-imagining of things with lots of twists on the original story, for sure. The first part of the book was a bit slow for me, but that could be because my husband moved the book and I couldn’t find it for months. I wonder if I read it all in one go if it would’ve moved better for me, but I tell y’all the reality not the what ifs. I do still plan on checking out book two, Spell of the Sinister [Buy Bookshop Amazon] as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Bonus: Here’s a picture of me and Danielle as cute lil babies when we first met back in 2018.
