Book Review: “Just For the Summer” by Abby Jimenez

I kinda feel bad for the gals over at Forever whenever Abby Jimenez has a book coming out because I know their inbox is overwhelmed with thousands of people begging and offering to sell body parts in order to get an early copy. But also, Abby’s books are fabulous and I will always be one of the thousands popping off an email in hopes of getting lucky too.

This is the third book in Abby’s series, following Part of Your World [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] and Yours Truly [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM]. While there are references to the characters of those two books, you don’t have to know all the details to enjoy Just For the Summer [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM]. There are some references that are much more enjoyable if you do know those other stories.

Just For the Summer starts with a glorious AITA post on Reddit about a guy who has that curse of the girl he dates finding her true love right after dating him. Emma responds to it because she also has that problem, so she starts chatting with Justin. Emma is a travel nurse along with her best friend, and after several calls with Justin, she begs to make their next contract be Minnesota…. near Justin. They decide to date for the summer so they both can find their forever person faster. Four dates, one kiss, and a breakup.

If you aren’t thinking the ‘Sure, Jan’ gif here, then you must not read much romance. Lol.

This book is perfection. It’s so funny (RACCOONS!) and carries such emotional depth on both sides of this relationship. They both have issues with their mothers, from Emma’s mom being a total flake and disaster that shows up at her rental, while Justin’s mom is preparing to head to jail and he’ll take custody of his three young siblings. The way Abby handles such heavy issues and mental health conversations is just beautiful. But also, BABY RACCOONS. Trust me, you’ll laugh. I cackled and read the scene to my husband, who also laughed heartily.

I cannot wait for whatever Abby puts out next.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
