Book Review: “One in a Millennial” by Kate Kennedy

Sometimes, a good title and cover is all it takes to get my interest. One in a Millennial by Kate Kennedy is one of those books, so when the team behind this one asked if I’d be interested in checking it out, I couldn’t say no.

I had never heard of Kate Kennedy before agreeing to read One in a Millennial [Buy BookshopAmazonLibroFM]. She’s apparently a pretty popular podcaster with a show called “Be There In Five”, which I’ll probably end up checking out at some point now.

Anyways…. the book. It’s officially described as an exploration of the life lessons of the millennial zeitgeist. As the subtitle implies, Kennedy discusses topics of friendships, fangirls, feelings, and fitting in, but she also explores some more sensitive topics I wasn’t expecting. That list includes religion, misscarriage, and IVF. If those are triggers for you, be aware before picking this one up.

While One in a Millennial is a collection of essays as commentary on growing up as a millennial and the pop culture that shaped us, it’s also extremely personal to Kate. As many times as she writes in this book that it’s not a memoir, it pretty much is, so definitely keep that in mind. There are a lot of angry early readers becaue of that detail specifically. However, I didn’t mind the personal stories. To me, it made it more relatable to see where her perspective was coming from and what shaped her. Maybe that’s because we’ve been through a lot of the same situations, to the point I want to interview her and make sure we aren’t related or something. Lol.

I found this book to be highly enjoyable overall. Kate’s writing is witty and creative, which you know makes me happy. This book is filled with clever turns of phrase, puns, and pop culture references that I wish I would’ve thought up first. It’s funny at times, while emotional and deep at others.

Honestly, no complaints come to mind.
