The amount of focus issues I’ve had trying to get to writing this review are absolutely on par with what you’d expect from this book. Basically perfection over here. Lol.
Tilly in Technicolor [Buy Bookshop LibroFM Amazon] is Mazey Eddings‘ YA debut and it is an adventure for the neurodiverse. Tilly is 18 and reeeeeally tired of how her mom is handling Tilly’s ADHD diagnosis. We meet her as she’s attempting to pack for a summer traveling Europe as an intern for her sister’s nail polish company, but her mom’s comments about behaving and remembering things is causing more stress than help.
Once on board the international flight, Tilly ends up in a whole mess with the guy sitting next to her, Oliver. (This scene made all the more wild by Mazey admitting much of that scene did happen to her in real life.) Tilly basically sprints off the plane in embarrassment, only to learn on the first day of her internship that Oliver is also part of the team and she has to spend the next three months with him.
We also get Oliver’s perspective throughout the story. He’s autistic and knows that his obsession with color theory can be a bit much, so he tries to mask it. But something about Tilly both annoys and fascinates him. It doesn’t help that his whole job is to take pictures of her and edit them for social media, so he’s gotta stare at her face and be tormented by not knowing the exact Pantone shade of the freckles on her face. He simply needs to know this detail.
This book is such a delight. It’s ridiculous and wild and makes me want to visit Europe again real bad. Lol. Mazey is ADHD and autistic, and there’s no mistaking the genuine feelings coming through. It’s authentic in a way that’s vulnerable and emotional under the humor. Tilly is learning who she is without someone treating ADHD like a problem and it’s beautiful.
Just freakin’ read Tilly in Technicolor already. Mazey always delivers.
