I’ve read a few of Susannah Nix‘s books in the King Family series, so I was delighted when she sent me a copy of the book kickstarting its spin-off series, Kilt To Order. This is the first book of the Kilt Trip series, which focuses on the people in Crowder, Texas who participate in Highland games. Yes, please!
Kilt to Order [Buy Bookshop Amazon] is a dual perspective novel following Casey and Gareth. They are roommates, along with Casey’s brother and one other man, and best friends. Casey is kinda having a meltdown because she is 28-years-old and hasn’t had a boyfriend, much less done anything with a guy. Her friends encourage her to hook up with someone once just to get it out of the way and then she won’t feel as stressed about it. They suggest Gareth, but Casey isn’t so sure.
Casey and Gareth have some similar hangups about the situation, including the whole ‘brother’s best friend’ thing and the ‘roommates’ thing. It could get really messy if things go sideways, but of course, Gareth eventually agrees as long as they follow a few ground rules…. which of course they will….
I freaking loved this one. I’m not a huge fan of the sex lessons trope, but this one worked. It’s also got doses of friends to lovers, brother’s best friend, plus, bookworm and muscle man. I mean, he’s a firefighter who does Highland games and he’s nice. What more could you want?
I was thoroughly exhausted from travel when I picked this one up, so the fact that I read it quickly and didn’t want to stop should speak volumes. It just made me happy. If you’re looking for a light, fun read with a hint of steam, do yourself a favor and pick this up. (Then go back and dive into the King family series too!) I cannot wait for the next one, whether that’s Ozzy or the other roommate.
