I am both excited and sad about Mazey Eddings’ newest novel, The Plus One. I was so excited to read this one because I loved her first two books, A Brush With Love [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] and Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM], and reviewed both of them here. But on the flip side, The Plus One [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] is the final book in the trilogy. Womp womp for us.
Anywho… onto the story!
The Plus One follows a third member of this super-precious friend group, Indira. We start the book with an epic scene (which I am not spoiling for you because it’s wild) of Indira’s relationship coming to an end. She doesn’t know where to go, so she shows up at her brother’s house.
Collin and his fiancé Jeremy welcome her to stay with them, but there’s a problem. They are coming up on their wedding quickly, so Collin’s childhood best friend Jude is also staying there for the next few weeks… and Jude is basically her nemesis. They have been snarky with each other as long as they can remember. But, beggars can’t be choosers so they agree to suck it up and play nice-ish.
While we have the fun of childhood enemies-to-lovers and fake dating in this story, we also have a lot of depth. Indira is processing through a hurt from her past, while Jude is struggling with PTSD from his time as a doctor in war zones. Mazey always does a great job with the depth of her characters and bringing mental health representation to the page and I am 100% here for it.
The Plus One has some entertaining and witty conversations and some fun spicy scenes.
I wish we were getting a fourth book with Thu’s story, but I totally understand Mazey’s reasoning for not writing that one. At least we get a little sliver of Thu getting a happy ending in this one so we aren’t left hanging on that front.
