“The Ballad of Never After” by Stephanie Garber

Ok y’all. Full disclosure: I read an ARC of The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber [Buy Bookshop Amazon] and needed a minute to process it before I wrote my review… and then forgot to come back to it. It’s now been nearly four months, so my memory might be a little fuzzy in places. I apologize.

At the end of the first book, Once Upon a Broken Heart [Buy Bookshop Amazon], Evangeline has learned about her own magic and promised to never trust Jacks again. But in this second book, the Prince of Hearts might be the only one she can trust because there are new curses and drama following her around. Aka, her husband is cursed to hunt her down and kill her.

There are a lot of questions throughout this book, including trying to nail down some identities and true intentions. In the first book, Jacks says he’s only protecting Evangeline because he needs her to open the Valory Arch, but when the truth comes out, as it always does, in a sneaky fashion, it throws everything into question.

The romantic tension between Jacks and Evangeline is amped all the way up in The Ballad of Never After, and I’m here for it. But, I won’t spoil it and I’ll leave it at that.

What I will say is, WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT ENDING?!?! At the time of the release, we thought it was just going to be a duology, and then we got that ending. There were mini riots all over social media because SURELY you cannot end it like that. But alas, we are saved and there will be a third book. Rude of Stephanie Garber to not warn us, but she amed up the drama in real life for us by withholding that info.

I guess it’s time to pre-order A Curse For True Love [Buy Bookshop Amazon] so we can get the ending we, I mean Evangeline, deserves.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
