Veronica Roth Returns With “Poster Girl”

The days of Divergent are long since past and it’s hard to fathom it’s been more than 10 years since Tris Prior first made a splash all over TBR lists… but here we are. Veronica Roth has published a couple books over the years, but now she’s got two coming out in a matter of FOUR MONTHS.

The first one is Poster Girl and I am so hyped about this book. I need people to read this dystopian mystery so we can talk about it. Seriously.

Poster Girl follows Sonya, who was literally the poster girl from a former government. It’s been 10 years since the revolution, and she’s been in a prison-of-sorts ever since. Her entire family, including her government-selected future spouse, all died during the revolution because they were favored by the former government and supported the use of a controversial technology.

Now, Sonya is in her mid-20s and her ex’s traitor of a boyfriend wants her to do the new government a favor and solve a cold case in exchange for her freedom. Sonya doesn’t really care about getting out since everyone knows her face, but there’s something about the missing girl that draws her to accept the case anyways.

Sonya’s journey is pretty wild and takes her through some twists that I didn’t expect. It’s also a story that makes you think about government surveillance and how that can affect the way you think. Sonya is kind of going through deprogramming while trying to find the missing girl, and it gives the story so many different layers. Roth researched how surveillance would impact a person’s psychology and it feels like such a genuine, realistic journey.

I was pretty irritated at the world when it kept interrupting my reading in the last 100 pages or so, because there is so much that happens. I was too busy expecting one thing to happen, which it does, that I was not prepared for some of the other things (in a good way). It’s just freaking great, okay?

I think Poster Girl is Roth’s best book yet. And now I’m ready to dive into her next upcoming book, a novella called Arch-Conspirator, which is a retelling of Antigone.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
