Book Review: Zachary Levi on “Radical Love”

I love Zachary Levi. He’s a great actor, he’s hilarious, he’s good looking, and he’s open about his faith, and I appreciate all of it.

Zach went on the Inside of You Podcast with Michael Rosenbaum and opened up about his struggle with mental health. An editor heard him sharing that story, and convinced him to write a book about it. He had some rough patches on the way but the book, Radical Love is now available in stores and I finally got around to the audiobook. (I’ve come to really enjoy celebrity audiobooks when they read it themselves. It feels more like them actually telling you their story when you hear their voice, but maybe that’s just me being a dork.)

In Radical Love, Zach takes his story back to his grandparents and explains how they influenced his parents, which in turn influenced how he and his sisters were raised. There was a lot of trauma in that family, and it’s deeply affected how he functions. That’s compounded by his career in the public eye, and led to some pretty dark days.

I love how vulnerable and honest Zachary is about his journey. He could very easily keep this story to himself, but he’s out here sharing about it in hopes that others who might be struggling know that there is help. It’s such a beautiful and necessary thing, and I’m thankful he took the time to put everything on paper in a real, honest way. It can be hard to read/hear at times, but knowing how dark things can get for someone who is doing well could be the tipping point for someone to reach out and get help.

The writing felt pretty solid throughout Radical Love, which is always nice. Some celebrity memoirs are rougher than others, so I always appreciate one that doesn’t trigger the editor side of my brain.

Radical Love is definitely worth picking up, especially if you are a fan of his work or are struggling with dark days of your own.

(And yes, I’m still hopeful/dreaming that I’ll be able to snag an interview with him for the youtube channel so more people can hear this valuable story.)
