Colleen Hoover’s Big Hit, “Verity”

Ok, ok, ok… I’m gonna jump on the Colleen Hoover train for a hot second.

Verity has been one of the ‘it’ books for a while now, thanks to BookTok. I’m generally reluctant to go along with the buzzy things unless I get there before it’s a big deal, so it’s no surprise I took my time getting around to Colleen Hoover. Verity fit a prompt in my August 2022 round of The Hype TBR Game, so I gave it a shot… and I’m generally glad I did.

Verity starts out in a pretty abrupt way. Lowen is on her way to a meeting and sees someone get hit by a car and killed. She’s close enough to be covered in the victim’s blood. A stranger helps her clean up and gives her his shirt so she can still make it to the meeting. Moments later, she’s shocked to find the stranger is part of her meeting.

Jeremy’s wife, Verity, is a popular author who can’t finish her series due to a medical issue. They want to keep the issues out of the press, and picked Lowen to ghost write the series. Lowen needs the cash since her own writing career is floundering, and reluctantly accepts. Jeremy asks Lowen to stay at his house for a few days while she goes through Verity’s notes for the books… all while Verity is in a coma in the house.

Things obviously get pretty crazy from there, with Lowen eventually believing Verity is alive and also responsible for the deaths of her twin daughters. It’s a dark and twisty story that challenges truth and what we really know about our partners.

Did I see the big twist coming from a mile away? Yes. Did that stop me from devouring this book and staying up until 1 a.m. reading it? Not even a little bit.

If you like thrillers with dark twists, then Verity might be a good next read for you… assuming you’re also behind the times like me.
