Holly James Tells “Nothing But The Truth”

Was I the only kid who watched the movie Liar, Liar starring Jim Carrey multiple times throughout their childhood? Please tell me I’m not alone. If you’re also familiar with the movie, then Holly James’ debut novel Nothing But The Truth is the updated spin you didn’t know you needed. I sure didn’t until the publisher sent me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Nothing But The Truth, in it’s simplest form, is a feminist take on Liar, Liar that had me giggling and mentally screaming, YASSSSS QUEEN!

We meet the heroine, Lucy, the night before her 30th birthday. A hot bartender makes a “life-changing drink” for her while she waits for her boyfriend to show up. Spoiler alert: He doesn’t.

The next morning, Lucy shakes up her routine by admitting out loud to her best friend that she doesn’t even like spin class and isn’t sure why she goes at all. They opt to indulge in breakfast, which isn’t very Lucy-like, and she does a few other things differently just because she suddenly feels courageous enough to leave the things behind that she only does to keep her status and appearance in line to be taken seriously. She also makes some bold statements at work where she realizes her ability to just let uncomfortable moments happen or lie are gone. The ability to lie is kinda key to being a celebrity publicist who is trying to lock down a movie star, so off Lucy goes in search of a remedy for this curse.

And of course, that means running into the hot bartender a time or two.

This novel is honestly so refreshing. I loved Lucy’s journey and how strong she grew during it. The situation that comes up at her job is nothing short of difficult and I know plenty of women (myself included) who have been through similar situations and wished they could do more. Maybe if enough women read this and catch on to Lucy’s courage, we can encourage each other to be the better, bolder versions of ourselves we deserve to be.

Seriously, just go read Nothing But The Truth right now. I neeeeeed to talk to people about it.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
