Book Review: Victoria Aveyard’s “Blade Breaker”

Imma keep this one short and sweet.

Victoria Aveyard is one of my favorite authors, so I will read whatever she puts out, and pre-order signed copies whenever they are available. Period.

Blade Breaker is her newest novel, and the second book in the Realm Breaker series (which I previously reviewed here.) This review will be short because I feel like I’m echoing a lot of the same sentiments. Mainly, that this series isn’t really my vibe, so my opinion on it might not be the best picture for you to go by. If you’re into fantasy and middle ages-ish type stuff, you’ll probably enjoy this a lot more than I did.

Realm Breaker was pitched as a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy meets Lord of the Rings‘ series, and it very much so is just that. The first book was more of a ‘get the gang together’ set up book, so I was looking forward to the action in book two. However, it too is more of a set up for the action. Blade Breaker takes our merry band of misfits around the map, chasing after Queen Erida and Taristan as they try to open the spindles and destroy/conquer the whole realm. The action definitely picks up toward the end of book two, so I am still hopeful that book three will bring the excitement that’s typical of Victoria. It’s just taking a long time to get there and I am impatient.

I struggled with the first half of Blade Breaker but the second was much more enjoyable for me. Another pro: the word “Spindle” wasn’t as overused, and “spindlerotten” was only in there a handful of times, which made me very happy.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
