Remember that book/ movie starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, A Simple Favor? Well, the author Darcey Bell is back with a new novel and I think I need to process this one a bit more… because WTF did I just read.

All I Want follows Emma and her husband Ben as they buy a creepy house in upstate New York and transition out of the city. This particular house has a lot of negative history but Ben is dead set on getting it since it has a theater in it and he’s a Broadway guy.

Emma is pregnant and a little skeptical, but knows she’s going along with what Ben wants. She stays in the house during the renovations, while Ben is working in NYC. When Ben is around, he’s basically THE WORST.

Seriously. I couldn’t stand Ben. He wasn’t around and didn’t listen most of the time when he was there. When he did listen, he immediately started gaslighting Emma into thinking her concerns weren’t real and were neurotic. When she sees someone standing in the field, he insists she’s hallucinating and needs to see a doctor. He’s the worst husband ever, and there’s a lot going on with him that’s even more infuriating, but I wont’ spoil the ending for you.

All I Want will keep you guessing, aside from Ben is bad news, but I’m not sure it’s entirely a good thing. There are a lot of questions about if this book is genius or a waste of time and I honestly can’t decide where I fall at this point. If it weren’t for the last chapter, I’d be leaning more toward annoying but genius. But that last chapter has me questioning the whole dang book.
