“The Last Thing He Told Me” From Laura Dave

If you haven’t seen posts about Laura Dave’s suspense novel, The Last Thing He Told Me, I really want to know what rock you’re living under! Ever since Reese Witherspoon selected it for her book club, it’s been everywhere on social media. It took a while, but my library hold finally came up so I gave it a shot.

Hannah is a regular chick who makes expensive wooden furniture for people and lives with her husband and teenage step-daughter. That is, until she gets a note from Owen that says ‘Protect her’ and he disappears amid an FBI raid at his workplace. Hannah then sets off on a quest to find out what he means and if he is innocent or guilty, only to find his name isn’t really Owen and his daughter’s name isn’t really Bailey.

It’s a great start and holds as fascinating for the majority of the book. However, I felt like the ending fell flat. It was too much exposition and not enough action. After so much build up, the last quarter just didn’t feel like it did the story justice. I enjoyed The Last Thing He Told Me as a whole, just wanted more from the story. It’s been picked up for an adaptation, so hopefully we get a little more excitement on screen.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
