For some reason, I thought One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston had been out for a while already. Must be because I read it a while back and wasn’t speed reading to finish before publishing date. My apologies for delaying in telling you about this wild, wacky, and wonderfully fun little romance.
August is a New York City transplant with all the skepticism in the world. Magical moments aren’t real, duh. She’s working as a waitress and trying to get by in the big city, when she meets Jane on the subway. I’ll avoid spoiling the meet cute, but it’s pretty relatable. This enticing woman happens to be on August’s train all the time and they develop a friendship (friends to lovers trope alert!)
Sounds pretty standard for a NYC love story, but don’t get too ahead of yourself. (Spoiler alert) You see, there’s a little magical realism in this one. Jane can’t leave the train because she’s not from this time. It gives the reader a little bit of a comparison on the LGBTQ community in the past and present as August tried to figure out how to save her potential girlfriend from the time slip.
Oh, and there’s this whole ‘saving the restaurant where she works’ thing too. August is going into full savior mode.
One Last Stop has a whole cast of quirky but loveable characters that make this novel quite the colorful adventure. It truly is a wild ride. I liked this one better than McQuiston’s previous novel, Red, White, and Royal Blue because it was just so dang bonkers.
