Book Review: “Death of a Pop Star: Vol 1” by Violet Karim

I’m a big K-Pop fan, so when Webtoon asked if I was interested in checking out a new graphic novel with idol vibes, I was intrigued. When it showed up with a photocard of the main character, I knew I was going to pick it up sooner than later.

Death of a Pop Star: Volume 1 [Buy Bookshop Amazon] introduces us to a debut performer who is topping the charts. Everyone loves her, or so she thinks. After wrapping up a commercial shoot, she falls down the stairs and dies. Lucky for her, the Grim Reaper who comes to collect her soul happens to be a fan, so he offers her a deal. However, what everyone thinks was a close call leads to some changes in her routine, including going to college. But with the universe out of balance, danger is waiting for her around every corner.

This is such a fun graphic novel. It’s got a little romance, humor, and paranormal fun. The Grim Reaper and his friend, the king of hell’s son, bring a fun twist to the usual music industry storyline. In the wake of K-Pop Demon Hunters, there’s the joke about demons in the music industry, and this goes perfectly with that vibe.

As to the art, it’s pretty solid. I wish it stayed with one look throughout instead of doing the quick-draw style for some frames, but that’s a common thing and I don’t love it in any of them. I just want to keep the high quality throughout. Sue me.

Either way, I’m excited to grab book two when it’s available.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
