I snagged a copy of One Death at a Time by Abbi Waxman through Berkley’s influencer program solely on vibes. I love a good murder mystery and was excited to jump in.
One Death at a Time [Buy Bookshop Amazon LibroFM] takes us on a journey along with Natasha Mason, who goes by her last name, as she meets a cranky, old actress at Alcoholics Anonymous. Julia is in a tough spot, since she broke her sobriety then woke up to find a dead man in her pool. Police think she killed her enemy, but she swears she didn’t do it, even though she can’t remember the night. Mason decides to be Julia’s AA sponsor and help her figure out what happened to Tony… and a few other murders and attacks that happen along the way.
Overall, this was pretty entertaining. My biggest complaint is there are so many dang characters that it can be hard to keep track of who is who. I got a wee bit confused here and there trying to remember why this random character is important. But, a large cast allows for several murders to happen thoughout the book, and that’s exactly what we got.
I enjoyed the interactions between Julia and Mason. Mason’s Gen Z vibes clashed with Julia’s crabby, old school disposition in really fun ways. Seeing them grow as friends and realize that they care about each other was beautiful. Love some good found family facing danger together.
